Mary Lou McDaniel, 77, of Engelevale, ND, died on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at Parkside Lutheran Home in Lisbon, N.D. Mary Lou Adolfs was born on February 10, 1941 in Lisbon, N.D. to Blanche (Seelye) and Sam Adolfs. She was baptized and confirmed into her faith at the Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Elliott, N.D. She attended the Alleghany #2 rural school and the Elliott High School.
She graduated in 1959 after completing her senior year at the Lisbon High School. She and Philip E. McDaniel were married on July 24, 1960 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Englevale, N.D. Mary Lou worked at the Title Building in Lisbon from 1959 through 1966. She also worked as a part-time hydrologist consultant for the State Water Commission for many years.
Throughout her 58 years of marriage to Phillip, she was a dedicated and hard-working mother, grandmother, and indisensable part of their family farm operation. She belonged to the Elliott Homemakers Club, Rebecca Circle, and was a 4-H leader for the Elliott Shamrocks. She was a long-time member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and served there in many capacities.
First and foremost, she loved being a grandmother and loved to spoil her grandchildren with her baked goods, especially her Special K bars. She was an avid gardener who enjoyed long hours in her vegetable and flower gardens. Enjoying the fruits (and vegetables) of her labors, she did a lot of canning and freezing.
She liked to crochet and made countless dishcloths and towels for birthday gifts, showers, or to donate to the church bazaar. The door was always open at the McDaniel home with Mary Lou’s infectious smile, a pot of coffee, and something good to eat. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends and was well known for her apple pie, apple dumplings, and rye bread.
She is survived by her husband Phil McDaniel and their three children: Julie (Martin) Waswick-Potts, Gwinner, ND; Scott (Holly) McDaniel, Englevale, ND; and Darcy (Matthew) McDaniel, Oak Creek, WI; eight grandchildren: Soren McDaniel, Olivia Waswick, Hayden McDaniel, Hadley McDaniel, Griffen McDaniel, Norah McDaniel, Garrett McDaniel and Kyle Potts; and two step-grandchildren: Makayla Grays and Aaron Potts. She is also survived by sisters: Anna Mae Henricks and Betty Hanna (both of Lisbon), brother Melvin (SueSann) Adolfs (Englevale), brother-in-law Don Lloyd (Lisbon), and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Blanche Adolfs, brother Glenn Erickson, sisters Laura Bell Caswell and Darlene Adolfs; son-in-law Corwin Waswick; parents-in-law Burnel and Dora McDaniel, brother & sister-in-law Bob & Marilyn McDaniel; brothers-in-law Roger Adolfs, Jim Hanna, and Henry Henricks, and sister-in-law Delores Erickson.
The family would like to extend their deepest thanks to CHI Hospice and the staff of Parkside Lutheran Home for the love and care they provided throughout the last few weeks of her life.
