(Benedetto) McKinnon, 90, long-time resident of Bellwood, passed away on February 3, 2019. She was known for her rainbow Jell-O molds, feisty one-liners, and ability to find humor in any situation. Born in Chicago, the middle child of five siblings, she graduated Steinmetz High School in 1946, and then began a ten year career working as a switchboard operator and supervisor at Illinois Bell.

She met her beloved husband, Vernon McKinnon, at a square dancing class at a Chicago YMCA. They were married 52 years before her husband’s untimely death in 2010. After raising three children, she re-entered the work force by working as a receptionist/office manager/EKG technician for a cardiologist, Dr. Domino de la Fuente, at his office in River Forest.

By 2010, she had accumulated over 30,000 hours as a volunteer at the former Westlake Hospital in Melrose Park, which led to an award from her State Representative for her service to the community. Never a leader until her “retirement,” she was the former President, for many years, of the Memorial Park District’s Senior Citizen’s Club that met in the Eisenhower Community Center in Hillside. A life-long Presbyterian, she was an active member of the former Bellwood Presbyterian Church, later the Berkeley-Hillside Presbyterian Church, where she and her husband were “Co-Skippers” of the Mariners Club for many years.

She is survived by her three children, Patty McKinnon (Ken Duggins), Doug McKinnon (Lynne), Grace McKinnon Weeks (Jonathan Weeks), grandchildren Saralyn, Jocelyn, Ian, Emily, Ben, Will, Sadie and Simon, and other family and friends who adored her spirit. Funeral services will be at Conboy-Westchester Funeral Home, 10501 W. Cermak Rd. , Westchester, on Saturday, February 9.
