Mary Hammond passed away, September 6, 2018 in Jacksonville, Florida. She returned peacefully to her Heavenly Father following a brief illness. She was 94 years old.

Born August 16, 1924 to Louis Takacs, Sr and Mary Babos Takacs, she was one of 10 children. Mary was the first of her family to graduate from high school and was a member of the Honor Society at Lynch High School, graduating class of 1942. Mary married Bruce Hammond, a native of Whitesburg and the love of her life, November 24, 1945 and moved from Lynch to Whitesburg, Ky.

There she raised her family, attended Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church, was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and was employed by the Bank of Whitesburg as a bookkeeper. Mary moved to Lexington, KY in 1975 and worked for the University Press at the University of KY until 1977 when she relocated to sunny Naples, FL. Mary retired in 1985 from the Collier County Property Appraisers office.

In 1997 Mary moved to Jacksonville, FL with her daughter and granddaughter. She attended the Hodges Blvd Presbyterian Church and served as the Presbyterian Women’s’ Circle Leader from 2000 to 2003. She supported the Baptist Children’s Home with prayer and donations.

Mary loved babies, dancing and telling stories. Her laugh was infectious and she loved her family with patience and a lifelong devotion. Mary is predeceased by her husband, Wilgus Bruce Hammond, her parents,5 brothers and 2 sisters.

Mary is survived by her three children, Wm. Chealis Hammond of Lexington, KY, Mary Lydia Hammond and Patricia Hammond of Jacksonville, FL. Three grandchildren, Marcus Hammond and Beth Hourigan (Jon) of Lexington, KY and Megan Gawrys (Jacob) of Jacksonville, FL.

Seven great-grandchildren, Davin, Macey, Mariabella, Jon William, Elizabeth Swann (Baby), Beckham and Brooklyn. Her baby sister, Rosie Hall of Naples, FL and a multitude of nieces and nephews. Services will be held at Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church, Whitesburg, KY on Wednesday, September 19th at 1:00.

Rev. Jerry Utt will officiate followed by a brief graveside service for the family. Friends and family are invited to join the family at the Pine Mountain Grill, Whitesburg, KY for a time of fellowship and sharing of memories.

Donations to Community Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation, 4266 Sunbeam Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32257 are welcome.
