Melvin’s Obituary Melvin A. Marousek was born on August 22, 1924 in Rapid City, South Dakota, and died at age 94 on May 10, 2019 in Belle Fourche, South Dakota. He was the fourth of six children of Meade County homesteaders Helen E. (Maresh) Marousek and Frank L. Marousek, and he never forgot his prairie homestead roots. He was the last survivor of the six Marousek children; Esther, Gladys, Ruth, Gerald, and Alan.

He went to grade school at the Strong one-room schoolhouse, a walk across the prairie from the homestead and to high school in Bonesteel, where his nickname was “Doc”, predicting his future? He attended the School of Mines briefly and then enlisted in the Army where he served in the infantry in France and Germany in World War II. That war inspired his lifelong passion for peace and for helping others.

He attended college and medical school at the University of South Dakota and the University of Illinois and then practiced medicine in Belle Fourche from 1957 until he retired in 1994. But he was in demand and worked even after he was retired, making house calls, traveling through blizzards to see patients and delivering babies. He was one of the first generation of board- certified Family Practitioners in the mid 1970’s.

At his 90th birthday party in 2014 many were heard to say, “best doctor I ever had”. He enjoyed his retirement years reading history and watching the news, gardening, collecting antiques, and traveling with his wife Eleanor. Dr. Marousek was the father of five children from his first marriage; Linda, Steve, Gary, Charles and Genevieve.

He was beloved by the children of his second wife Eleanor; Gary, Todd, Wendy, and Wanda. All of them and Belle Fourche will miss him. A gathering of family and friends and sharing of memories will be held Wednesday, May 15 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Kline Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche.
