Obituary for Melvin “Short” Lee Starr Melvin Lee Starr, who was affectionately known as “Short”, of Castle Rock, Colorado, passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2019, peacefully in his sleep just 9 days before his 89th birthday. A celebration of his life will be held Sunday, January 13th from 11:00am-3pm at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Multi-Purpose Barn 500 Fairgrounds Drive Castle Rock, Colorado 80104. “Short” was born January 11, 1930 in Douglas County, Colorado to Edward and Lavona Starr.

He grew up and attended school in a tiny schoolhouse in Douglas County. In July of 1949, he married Leanna Fern Waring. “Short” served in the United States Army in the Korean War.

He worked as a ranch hand and showman for Paulk Cattle Company near Perry Park. He then was the caretaker of the Continental Divide Raceway, where he worked for 18 years. He was then employed as an equipment operator for A&M Excavation and Castle Rock Contractors.

He was well known as a great operator that changed the landscape of Castle Rock. He enjoyed hunting and riding with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department Posse and spending time with his family. “Short” loved the town of Castle Rock and was always proud to live there.

Melvin is survived by his two daughters, Kathleen and Teresa, son Brett, his wife of 69 years, Leanna, 5 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and his younger brother Cliff Starr. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Lavona, brother Willard and granddaughter Brittany Pamela Haneghan.
