East Liverpool, Ohio – Michael Lander, Jr., 96, of East Liverpool passed away Friday, March 1, 2019 at his home with his daughter by his side. Michael was born June 12, 1922, in Sighisoara, Romania. Through sponsorship, he and his family came to America in 1929, when he was seven years old.
His family ultimately settled in Martin’s Ferry, Ohio. After graduating from Martin’s Ferry High School, Michael enlisted in the Navy and served in WWII aboard the USS Hank, and USS Osmond Ingram. Upon returning home from the service, Michael married his childhood friend, Alice Billos, who became his life-long partner.
He was employed by Ohio Edison, and later relocated to East Liverpool to complete his career at the First Energy Bruce Mansfield Plant in Shipping Port, PA as Operations Supervisor and Trouble Shooter. After retirement, Mike and Alice traveled regularly and had the opportunity to return to his birthplace in Romania, where his Grandmother was once the town Mayor. Aside from travel, Michael was an avid gardener and spent countless hours tending to his beautiful yard in East Liverpool.
Michael was was very well read and kept up with his foreign dialect, so was able to read the Saxon paper and speak German fluently. With his vast array of knowledge, Mike was always ready for a discussion on a variety of topics, and loved a good debate. Michael’s true gift was his warm demeanor and kind nature.
Anyone lucky enough to meet him were instantly taken in by his friendly manner and infectious smile. He loved to joke and was always willing to share spirited stories of his life’s adventures. Michael Lander was the true epitome of a hard-working man, dedicated to his family.
Many friends and acquaintances have referred to him as one of the most kind and interesting people they have ever met. Michael was preceded in death by his wife Alice W. (Billos) Lander; brother Franz Lander and sister Suzanna. Surviving are his daughters Terry (Ernie) Walker and Susan Copeland; five grandchildren Michelle (Matt), Stacey, Stephanie and the twins Aaron and Aric and several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren Michael will be dearly missed, however to quote one of his favorite German sayings: Auf Weidersehen – Until we meet again.
A private service was held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements entrusted to the Dawson Funeral Home. Memorial donations in Michael’s name may be directed to Alliance of Transylvanian Saxons (ATS).
