Obituary for Michael “Pops” Figlar Michael “Pops” Figlar, 85, of Olmsted Falls, passed away April 14, 2018. Beloved husband of Laurel (Wohlgemuth); loving father of Cindy Volk, Luanne (Bob) Francescangeli, Michael (Darlene) Figlar, and Jeannie (Soon) Pak; dear grandfather of Allyson and Alexis Figlar, and Brendan Pak; cherished brother of Helen (Nick) Lizanov, Gerry (Mickey) Abbott, and Margie (Ben) Augenstein; loving uncle to many. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Veronica (Straka) Figlar Sr. and siblings Joe (Toni) Figlar, John (Ginny) Figlar Jr., and Anna (John) Alzo.
Mike was a proud United States Army veteran serving during the Korean conflict. Upon his return from the service, he attended Western Reserve University, majoring in chemistry. It was then that he met his bride-to-be Laurel Wohlgemuth.
In 1962 they were married and started their family. He worked for 30-plus years as a diesel mechanic for the Cuyahoga Valley Railroad at J & L Steel. He was known for working out, telling corny jokes, and writing crazy songs and poems for family reunions and other occasions.
His greatest joys in life included being “Pops” to his three grandchildren, gardening, any and all sports, playing poker, fantasy football, March Madness and of course 50 years of ALAFFFA family reunions. Pops fought a long, courageous battle against heart failure, but through it all, he always had heart. We’ll miss you Pops!
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 from 4-8 PM at Sunset Chapel, 6245 Columbia Road, North Olmsted, OH 44070. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at 11:30 AM at St. Mary’s Church of Berea, 250 Kraft Street, Berea, OH 44017. Family/friends will meet at Sunset Chapel at 10:30 AM.
A graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial Park, 6265 Columbia Road, North Olmsted, OH 44070 to follow the mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Michael’s name to Hospice Services of Southwest General, 18697 Bagley Rd. , Middleburg Heights, OH 44130-3497, or cash donations may be made to ALAFFFA Fund via a family member.
