“Tommie” Mildred Boyd Taylor was the sixth child born to the union of the late Jennie Verne Green and Truman Pettis Boyd on April 5, 1941 in Gadsden, Alabama. “Tommie” Mildred was baptized at the age of five at Union Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Tucker and continued her Christian walk throughout her life. “Tommie” Mildred later united with Fellowship Baptist Church under Rev.
Willie G. Davis, Sr. “Tommie” Mildred attended schools in Gadsden, Alabama and Carver High School Class of 1960. She worked at St. James Catholic School on Rainbow Drive for several years. “Tommie” Mildred was united in marriage to Rev.
Hersey L. Taylor in 1958 and this union was blessed with eight children, five girls and three boys. Two girls, Baby Girl Taylor and Catherine Denise Taylor preceded her in death. “Tommie” Mildred became the First Lady of Greater Calvary Baptist Church, Anniston, Alabama in 1996 upon her husband being called to pastor.
“Tommy” Mildred and Hersey’s love was a story for the ages. “Tommie” Mildred loved serving the Lord. She was known in church for her fabulous outfits and hats.
She was also her husband’s biggest fan. “Tommie” Mildred was a mother to many from the neighborhood to the church. She was an inspiration to all who knew her.
“Tommie” Mildred was an artist, teacher, and creative writer of plays. If you wanted to see a play, she put on the best as a writer who wrote over 20 plays. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, friend, grandma and great grandma.
To know her was to love her. She was always humble and loving, and loved to feed people. She was a generous host and talented cook and we will never forget her turkey and dressing, cakes and pies.
“Tommie” Mildred passed into new life with family at her side on May 11, 2019 at St. Vincent East Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, Truman Jr., Andelia, Virgil and Eleanor. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Rev.
Hersey L. Taylor, Sr.; children, Marian (Alfonza) Williams, Camelia (Harry) Jackson, Pamela L. Taylor, Brian Taylor, Hersey (Pam) Taylor, Jr., all of Gadsden, Barry Taylor, Abilene, Texas; sister, Margaret (Tom) Leavell, Huntsville, AL; aunts, Roberta Glosser, Lithonia, GA, Kay (Lewis) Kimes, Upland, California, Stella Harris, Cleveland, Ohio; uncles, Floyd Taylor, Gallion, AL, Harrison Martin, Muncy, Indiana; sisters-in-law, Saratha Goggins, Elsie Coleman and Sue Brasfield; brother-in-law, Matthew Brasfield; special children, Christine (Kenneth) Miller, Derrick Malone, Terry Card, Atlanta, GA, Wayne Emory, Tina (Ronald) Lewis, Birmingham, AL and Vanessa (Eddie) Johnson, Gadsden, AL; 29 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grand.
