Mildred M. Eshelman, 94, peacefully passed away on Friday, February 1, 2019 at Autumn House West, York. She was the wife of the late David E. Eshelman, to whom she was married 66 years until his death December 23, 2012. Born March 30, 1924, in Dover, York County, and a long-time resident of Jacobus, Millie was the daughter of the late Franklin and Mima (Lightner) Bechtel.

Millie attended Stough’s School and Dover High School, before moving to Jacobus to help her sister with child care and to work at Bernstein’s Sewing Factory. The couple built a home in Jacobus, where she became a homemaker and raised her children. She was an active member of Salem UCC, Jacobus for over 60 years.

Millie enjoyed spending time visiting with her large family, patronizing her favorite restaurants, enjoying crosswords and television, and keeping journals. Millie is survived by daughter, Debra Raver and husband, David and by son, David Lee Eshelman and wife, Sally all of York. She was a loving grandmother to Kenton Raver, Caitlin Raver Landsman (Michael), Scott Eshelman, and Robert Eshelman, as well as to great-grandchildren, Jane and Jonathan Landsman.

The last survivor of nine Bechtel siblings who reached adulthood, she was predeceased by sisters, Dorothy Smith, Ellen Darr, Mary Myers, Mae Anderson, and Ruth Anderson and brothers, Franklin, John, and Raymond Bechtel. A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Salem United Church of Christ, 24 Franklin Street, Jacobus, PA 17407 to be officiated by Pastor Kevin Becker. There will be a visitation before the service from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Her final resting place will be in Salem Union Cemetery, Jacobus.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mildred Eshelman’s name may be sent to Salem UCC Memorial Fund, 24 Franklin Street, Jacobus, PA 17407. The family expresses its deep gratitude to her cheerful caregivers at Autumn House West of York and the entire staff of Grane Hospice for their compassionate care provided to our Mother. When so often she fretted over those of us whom she loved so deeply, we cautioned her “Life is too short to worry so much”.
