Millie Riera, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt passed away on January 31, 2019 at home, surrounded by precious family. She was born in San Pedro on August 30, 1923 to Teresa and Carlo Sima, and resided in San Pedro and Redondo Beach. She married Joe Riera on March 29, 1943, and together they had three children: Maria, Joe, and Monica.

Millie is best known to the South Bay as the owner and namesake of Millie Riera’s Seafood Grotto in Redondo Beach. Opened by her husband in 1946, she took over ownership of the restaurant in 1956 after her husband’s sudden passing. Millie Riera’s Seafood Grotto was a South Bay landmark for over 51 years until its closing in 1997.

Millie loved her employees and her customers, which turned a business into a giant family. One of Millie’s passions was her love of sports. She loved watching sports and knew the stats of every team and player.

She enjoyed golfing with her ladies groups, as well as Charlie, Mike, and Kevin. Millie also loved attending the opera with her friend, Tosh. She spent endless hours caring for her hundreds of macramé-hanging plants at her home in San Pedro.

Millie was generous with her listening ear, a fresh pot of coffee, and an open door. She was known for her wisdom and her great advice. Above all, Millie loved her family, especially her grandchildren, which brought her more joy than she could have ever imagined.

Millie is preceded in death by her husband, Joe, and her brothers, John Sima, Tony and Mario Zangaro. Millie is survived by her son Joe (Diane), Monica (Mickey), eight grandchildren, her many great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Marian Sima, and numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved like her own children. Mass in celebration of Millie’s life will be held on Friday, February 8, 2019 at 10:30am at Mary Star of the Sea Church.

A private burial will follow. Please sign the guestbook at mcnerneysmortuary.com.
