She was a mother, a grandmother, a loving wife and lifelong companion. Born in Barranquilla, Colombia in 1931, she shared her early life with her mother Helena, father Ricardo and her two sisters Doris and Helena.
Miryam lost her father when she was only 15, but despite that burden, she worked hard to help support her family with an unyielding work ethic that she passed on to her children, a gift that underlies all of their successes. In the mid-1950s, she met the man she knew she would marry and be her lifelong companion, Guillermo ”Bill” Castillo. Miryam had relocated to New York with her family about this time, and knowing Bill would follow, she paid the twenty-five dollar fee for Bill to file the papers needed to accompany her to New York.
For many years they would joke about what a great deal she got for her twenty-five bucks. Miryam and Bill settled in New York and started their family. Ricardo, William and Patricia are their three children.
She was never happier than when she was with her children, her dear Bill and the rest of her family. Family was her most significant of joy. In the mid-1970s, the family relocated to Tulsa, OK where she saw all three of her children through college and on to fulfilling careers.
Miryam’s dream of becoming a grandmother was realized with five grandchildren, Nathan, Ali, Gabriel, Josh, and Jaxon, over whom she dotted always. Caring for them was her passion, she took being a grandmother very seriously, she loved it so very much. She surrounded herself with their photos and the various works of art they each created for her at different stages in school.
Miryam enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her family, on vacations, birthdays, dinners and sporting events like football and soccer. Time with her family always filled her with joy and happiness. As her children and grandchildren were her s of joy and happiness, it was her beloved husband Bill who served as the of strength and serenity.
When she was with him, you could see how much she loved him. By his side, she would beam like a schoolgirl, her crush never fading. For more than sixty years, Miryam and Bill shared a life rich with love for each other, their children and grandchildren, always guided by her unwavering faith in God.
In life, Miryam was a warm, tender and beautiful person. Although we will miss her for the rest of our days, we forever carry the joy of her memory and strength of her spirit to guide us to the solace and peace she would want us all to share with her now until we are reunited. Goodnight mommy, pleasant dreams and sleep with the angles.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, 11:00 a.m., at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Tulsa.
