Paul Allan Downes of Ridgely died Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Compass Regional Hospice in Centreville, Maryland. He was 83 years old. Mr. Downes was born in Baltimore corner MD, the oldest son of the late Charles H. Downes and Viola Downes.

In his lifetime Mr. Downes was a farmer, served two years in the National Guard, worked for Service Trucking, Elliot Brothers, and Allen Foods. He worked for over 20 years at Mulholland Harper Sign Company. Mr. Downes also operated his own trucking company and survived being hit by a train in 1989 while in his rig.

Mr. Downes was a loyal member of The Loyal Order of Moose in Camden Wyoming DE. Mr. Downes loved horse racing. In the 1970’s he owned, trained, and drove racehorses.

Among those were Afton Cheer and Merry Go diamond. He got back in the business in 2003-2005 with horses Magical Viper and Four wizards. The last 15 years of his life he worked driving a truck and doing farm work with Tuckahoe Farms.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in his death by his wife, Joan Hall Downes in 2001 and brother David H. Downes in 1993. He is survived by his daughter Ginger Lockhart, Son-in-law Daniel Lockhart, Sr., only grandchild Danny Lockhart, Jr., sister Eloise Melvin (George) of Camden Wyoming DE, and his friend Virginia Dear of Dover DE. A funeral service will be held Thursday May 16, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home in Greensboro MD, with a visitation one-hour prior.
