Nancy Estelle Alford April 15, 1935 – February 01, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| View Guest Book Entries| Send Sympathy Card Nancy Estelle Bruner Alford passed away the evening of February 1, 2019 at Ogeechee Area Hospice in Statesboro, Ga. She was 83. Nancy was born on April 15, 1935 in Cedartown, Ga.

Nancy graduated from Cedartown High School, where she was a cheerleader. She matriculated at Mercer University where she earned a degree in Education and was also a member of Phi Mu Fraternity as well as the Mercer Glee Club. Nancy would also later earn her M. Ed.

from the University of South Carolina. Nancy taught first grade for many years in both Georgia and South Carolina, but she particularly cherished her years as a Special Education teacher at Bethlehem Elementary School in Calhoun County, South Carolina. Always a lover of music and theatre, Nancy was an accomplished pianist and vocalist, and enjoyed acting in many community theatre productions.

Until her later years, she was a faithful member of both church and choir wherever she lived. She and her late husband, Jim, were active members of the Sumter Little Theater in Sumter, SC as well as the South Carolina Theater Association. In Calhoun County, SC, she and Jim were founding members of the Calhoun Players, where Nancy starred in roles such as Bloody Mary in “South Pacific”.

Nancy worshiped at Trinity Episcopal Church where she was a faithful member of the Daughters of the King and Loving Hands. She was a member of the Polk County (Ga. ) Historical Society as well as several chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), serving in various offices from Regent to Chaplain.

Even in assisted living, Nancy remained as active as possible, participating in a weekly exercise class, Bible studies, sing-alongs and other special events, such as a fund-raiser for Alzheimer’s. Resilient and positive, Nancy always sought to make the best of any situation. She loved life and was blessed to be able to travel, mostly after retirement, to places both domestic and foreign.

She always loved the water and times with her family on vacation at Pawley’s Island, SC. Nancy is preceded in death by her husband, James G. Alford, Jr. and her parents, Ella Roberts Bruner and William Gwathmey Bruner. She is survived by her children, Marianna (Victor) Voiselle and Weston (Elizabeth) Alford; her grandchildren, Mariah, Cameron, and Sarah Voiselle, and Gibson, Christopher, Elizabeth, Nancy, Weston, and Timothy Alford; her brother and sister-in-law, William and Nicolette Bruner, and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services for Nancy Alford will be conducted Thursday February 7, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. in the Greenwood Cemetery in Cedartown Georgia. The family gives special thanks to her loving caregivers, Janice Mikell, Jackie Robinson and Maggie Long, as well as the directors and staff at The Lodge at Bethany Assisted Living and Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Joiner Anderson Funeral Home of Statesboro Georgia has charge of the service.
