Obituary for Nell Barker Hardie Nell Barker Hardie, 84, of Spartanburg, SC, died Sunday, May 27, 2018, at Spartanburg Medical Center surrounded by her children. Born in Walhalla, SC, she was the daughter of Sudie Harbin and Charles Edwin Barker. She was married for 61 years to Newton Gary Hardie, who passed away earlier this month.

Mrs. Hardie graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. in biology from Winthrop University and completed graduate studies at Emory University. She worked in a pathology lab in San Diego, CA, until the birth of her first child. In addition to raising four children and supporting the professional and civic endeavors of her husband, Mrs. Hardie devoted herself to charitable causes throughout her life.

In LaGrange, GA, she volunteered at West Georgia Medical Center and for the American Cancer Society. Since moving to Spartanburg for a second time in 1990, she has been a faithful volunteer with St. Luke’s Free Medical Clinic, Mobile Meals, Spartanburg Soup Kitchen, and the Aftercare Ministry at Westminster Presbyterian Church. She taught Sunday School, served as superintendent of Sunday School, and was active in the Women of the Church in the various congregations of which she was a member.

A master gardener, Mrs. Hardie loved working in her yard, hiking in the mountains, and walking on the beach. Mrs. Hardie is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dave and Marissa Hardie of Beaufort, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Mark Springfield of Raleigh, NC; daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Charles Cate of Columbia, SC; and son and daughter-in-law, John and Adrienne Hardie of Atlanta, GA. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren.

Mrs. Hardie is predeceased by her husband, parents, and two brothers, Charles D. Barker and William C. Barker. A private burial service will take place in Oconee Memorial Park, Seneca, SC. A celebration of life will be conducted at 4:00 PM Thursday, May 31, 2018, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 309 Fernwood Dr., Spartanburg SC 29307.

The family will receive friends after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Spartanburg County Foundation, 424 East Kennedy Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
