Nick “Tubby” Otto March 11, 1929 – December 30, 2018 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Send Sympathy Card Nick “Tubby” Otto, age 89 of Cannon Falls and formerly of New Trier, died peacefully on Sunday afternoon, December 30, 2018, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems ~ Cannon Falls. Nicholas L., one of twelve children of Nicholas and Elizabeth (Hubert) Otto, was born on March 11, 1929, in Douglas Township, Dakota County, Minnesota. Nick attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and on November 12, 1949, he was united in marriage to Bernice Leifeld at Guardian Angel Catholic Church in Hastings.

In 1955, Nick worked as an Operating Engineer for Austin P. Keller and retired after thirty-three years. He enjoyed golfing, playing horseshoes, hunting, fishing, camping, watching baseball every Sunday, and grilling. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Marie Lorentz, Betty Rother, Dick, John, Harold, Ray, Bill, Leo, and George; son-in-law, Harvey Duffing; and by his grandson, Jonathan Otto.

Nick is survived by his wife of sixty-nine years, Bernice; children, Jeanne Duffing, Mike (Karen) Otto, Ron (Joanne) Otto, Jerry (Michelle) Otto, Julie (Kerry) Otte, Theresa Otto, Ken (Suzy) Otto, and Marv (Deanne) Otto; nineteen grandchildren and thirty-six great grandchildren; brothers, Jim (Donna) Otto and Joe (Karen) Otto; and by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 3, 2019, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in New Trier, with Father Terry Beeson officiating. Interment will follow at the parish cemetery.

Family and friends are cordially invited to a visitation from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday evening, and also from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning, all at church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to American Cancer Society, Alzheimer’s Association, or to the donor’s choice in memory of Tubby. Arrangements are being completed by Starkson Family Life Celebration Chapel of Hastings.
