Norman F. Tischler, age 72, a beloved musician who played sax, flute, clarinet and trombone with dozens of bands, solo artists, religious institutions and other organizations, died on January 21 in Willoughby, OH. A friend of hundreds, in his final week, after a sudden diagnosis of cancer, his hospital room constantly overflowed with fellow musicians and other longtime friends. The Brooklyn, NY, native arrived in Cleveland in 1969, as a VISTA volunteer, to work in the inner city.

Norm’s musical talent led to his being pursued by many to join bands, perform on recording sessions, play in religious services and participate in countless nightclub jam sessions. Among his bands were the nationally touring and recording Tiny Alice, plus Bazoom, the Motion, Freewheelin’, Easy Street, Gopher Broke, Blue Lunch, the Travis Haddix blues band, InCahootz, and several others. A longtime sax teacher, Norman also served as the director of the Workman’s Circle Klezmer Orchestra, and played in a long-running production of the musical Beehive.

He is survived by his cherished partner Lyn Adams, two nieces, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Rose Tischler, sister Evie Agiewich, and daughter Kristen/Rachel Lehman. A memorial service will be held at 2PM on Sunday, Feb.
