Norman J. Smith Sr., 79, of rural Thompsonville and formerly of Murphysboro, passed away at his home on Tuesday, January 8, 2019. Norman was born in Murphysboro, IL on October 19, 1939, a son to the late Pastor Willie and Minnie M. (Norris) Smith. He was united in marriage to Dena M. Orsburn in Murphysboro on January 30, 1986; Dena survives of Thompsonville, IL.

Norman was a Pentecostal and had been employed at Brown Shoe and later Brunswick Laboratories both in Murphysboro. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 13, 2019, at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro. Pastor Elizabeth Ferguson will officiate.

Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until the hour of services on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials are the preferred form of remembrance and may be made to the family. Memorials will be accepted at the funeral home or can be mailed to The Norman Smith Family in care of Crawshaw Funeral Home, 1421 Walnut Street, Murphysboro, Il 62966.

Survivors include his wife, Dena M. Smith of Thompsonville; nine children, Diane Brock of Brownsville, TX, Janet (Eric) Plucker of Murphysboro, Rob Smith of West City, IL, Lorie Ann Mars of Benton, IL, Donnie Smith of West Frankfort, IL, Norman Smith Jr. of Murphysboro, Steve Smith of Missouri, Danny Smith of Illinois, Sheila M. Ferguson of Harrisburg, IL, and several grand and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Loren Smith and one sister, Brenda Taylor. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Jerry Lynn Smith on March 21, 1960, and 11 siblings.
