Opal Mae Mask Thompkins was born in Sherman, Texas to Ira Mask and Ray Irene Boyd. Her family consisted of a total of eight children with her sister, Benita Smith, remaining. She started elementary school at the age of three and finished high school at fifteen.
She was in a hurry to move to Dallas with her older sister, Beatrice Patterson Perry, who passed away January 24, 2012. In Dallas, she began beauty school at Madame C J Walker’s and received her license. During that time, she met her husband, Weldon Thompkins, the brother of a classmate.
Weldon would always say, “She was prettier that a speckled pup in a red wagon”. That was the beginning of a forty-year marriage until his death, October 9, 1987. They built their home at 2611 Lawrence Street in about 1953 and she became a member of the Lawrence and Marder Church of Christ soon after that.
She had LVN training prior to becoming a postal clerk for over 20 years until her retirement. Weldon had a son, Detro Thompkins, before their marriage that produced seven children: Martha Maynard, Gwendolyn Beal, Winfred Thompkins, Weldon Thompkins, Vickie Burnett, Sandra Obaze and Pamela Grays. Grandchildren: Detro Thompkins, Stephen Thompkins, Regina Thompkins, Milton Maynard, Michael Maynard, Auturia Denise Lowe, James Beal, II, Jennie Beal Young, Winfred Howard Thompkins, Patrick Thompkins, Anttwann Thompkins, Weldon Thompkins, III, Destin Thompkins, DeAndre Williams, KeWannah Williams Hawkins, Manjerrell Burnett, Tamara Burnett, Amber Obaze Ford, Alona Obaze, Akeena Obaze, Brandy Thompkins Grays, Robert Grays, Jr. Great-Grandchildren: Darius “DJ” Garner, Daneisha Garner Carter, Jamarkuis Beal, Tatianna Cannon, James Beal, III, Andre Young, Jaya Young, Aja Young, Paxton Thompkins, Paige Thompkins, Parker Thompkins, Quinn Thompkins, Lila Thompkins, Ajani Thompkins, Kaleb Thompkins, DeDraylon Williams, Dekyla Williams, Keeric Russel, KeAndre Williams, Skye Thompkins, Kali Thompkins, Tavaria McQueen, Destiny Taylor, Keeiona Burnett, Kejuan Burnett, Darren Ford, Darrius Ford, Dmari Bell, Tesean Christopher-Jacob Funchess, Briasia Opal-Rain Thompson, Jakoby Jade-Star Thompson, Syniyah Renee Grays.
