OUIDA’s Obituary Ouida Lester Wyatt, 91, Vero Beach, FL, passed away at 7:45 p.m. on Friday, January 25, at VNA Hospice in Vero Beach. She was born Nov. 17, 1927, in Lyon County, KY, to Price Edward and Myrtle Vona (Johnston) Lester.

She married John Remington (Jack) Wyatt on April 10, 1948, in Memphis, TN. He preceded her in death on April 8, 2003. Ouida was a long-time educator with the Indian River County Schools.

She taught physical education at Dyersburg (TN) High School before she and Jack moved to Vero Beach in 1956. She taught PE at Vero Beach Jr./Senior High School before becoming a guidance counselor at the Junior High School in 1964. She later was principal of Beachland Elementary School and then Middle 7 school and then was Title 1 Reading Program Coordinator.

She retired February 1, 1988. A decades-long season ticket holder, she attended VBHS football games for 62 years. She belonged to the Hibiscus Garden Club and was a past-president.

She was a member of the Retired Teachers’ Association and volunteered at Shining Gardens. She also was a leader in the Alzheimer and Parkinson Association, volunteering as a counselor for many years. Ouida was very active as a member of First Baptist Church in Vero Beach.

She was dedicated to her work in support of the Women’s Missionary Union at the church. She was a deacon for decades in her own right after assisting her husband with his deacon’s duties. She graduated from Murray State University, Murray, KY, where she was football queen, and University of Georgia at Athens, GA.

She attended Lyon County High School, Butler High School in Princeton, KY, and graduated as valedictorian from Trigg County High School. Survivors include her sons, Otis Wade (Melanie Shroff) Wyatt of Fernandina Beach, FL, and Rev. John G. (Deanna Dickerson) Wyatt of Frankfort, KY, one daughter, Robin Lester Wyatt (Ed) Walston of Saint Anthony, IN, grandchildren and great-grandchildren Jennifer (Josh) Lackowski, Nicholas Wyatt and Khaleesi Lackowski, all of Fernandina Beach, FL, John R. Wyatt II of Hermitage, TN, Stephen A. Wyatt and Lennon Wyatt, both of Frankfort, KY.

Also surviving are four sisters, Sarah (Karl) Hussung, Murray, KY, Charly Morgan, Franklin, TN, Cozette Morstein, Imperial Beach, CA, Nancy (Bob) Walker, Valley Center, CA, three brothers: Bill Lester, Gracey, KY, Bob (Betty) Lester, Cadiz, KY, and Tony (Mary) Lester, Townsend, TN, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Bonnie Fitzpatrick Armstrong, Owensboro, KY; three brothers-in-law, Tom Fitzpatrick, John Armstrong, W.R. Wilson, Michael Smith and Floyd Morstein, and sister-in-law Marjorie Lester. The family will receive friends 4-7 PM, Friday, February 1, 2019 at the Strunk Funeral Home in Vero Beach.

A funeral service celebrating her life will begin at 11 AM, Saturday, February 2, 2019 at First Baptist Church of Vero Beach with Dr. Joe LaGuardia officiating. A later funeral service will be conducted in Cadiz, KY, and she will be buried at Eddy Creek Cemetery in Caldwell County, KY. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to First Baptist Church of Vero Beach, 2206 16th Ave.
