Preceded in death by Howard Gardner, husband of over 60 years, parents Lorna and Charles Core, sisters Rosemarie “Terry” (Joe) Yurasek, Virginia (Chuck) Gilligan, and Judi Cincione, brother Tom (Eva) Core and son-in-law Bob Heider.
Survived by sister-in-law Julie Gardner, brother-in-law Al Cincione; sons Bob (Yvonne) Gardner, Jeff (Mary) Gardner; daughters Cindy Heider and Karen McCann; grandchildren: Lara (Jon) Wittlin, Charlie Gardner, Troy (Qadree) Holmes, Phil (Owen) Gardner, Amy Gardner, Fr. Tom Gardner, Billy (Maura) Gardner, Julie (Charles) Holbrook, Laura Gardner, Sarah McCann, Katie (Miles) Franklin, and Emily McCann (fiancé Aleksandr Bevz); great-grandchildren: Alex, Sam and Daniel Wittlin, Nigel Holmes, Chiara Gardner and Elizabeth Franklin, and a great many nieces and nephews. Patty was born in Somerset, Ohio, and raised in Columbus.
She attended Corpus Christi grade school and St. Mary of the Springs high school, graduating from Mt. Carmel School of Nursing in 1949. She met her future husband, Howard, at the Trianon Ballroom in Toledo while finishing nurse’s training at the Toledo Hospital.
They were married at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Columbus in 1950. In the later 1950s, Patty became an active charter member of St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, sometimes helping out at the grade school. She worked as a nurse off and on for several years, and in her later years as a volunteer at Mt.
Carmel Hospital. She joined the parish’s Altar Rosary Society, loved to bowl in a women’s bowling league, and helped form a parish ladies bridge club, where she made many lifelong friends. Other interests included participation in the St Philip Variety and Style Show, where she once played Paul McCartney in a skit.
Faith and family were what defined Patty the most. She and Howard worked hard to put their four children through Catholic schools. Her devout Catholic faith also led her to attend many prayer groups throughout her life.
She loved spending time with her extended family, especially the rounds of “penny ante” poker with her mom, aunts, uncles, sisters and brothers-in-law at get togethers. Patty had a dry wit and loved to tease people. She also loved Memorial Day family reunions, the Holy Trinity Garden Party and St. Joe’s Family Picnic, all in Somerset.
She was very proud to see all of her children graduate from college, and took an interest in all of her grandchildren’s activities. When all their kids were raised, Patty and Howard traveled throughout the United States and Europe. They especially loved to go to casinos and play the slot machines, but never for too long and never spent much money.
Her children always knew their mother would be there for them when they needed her the most. She had many challenges in her long life, but she faced them all with a strong faith and conviction. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the hospice staff for their loving care of our mom in her last days at Mount Carmel East Hospital.
