Spencer, 96, of Maynard, Arkansas, passed away on Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at the Phil and Flo Jones Hospice House, in Jonesboro. Paul was born on Sunday, November 5, 1922, in Maynard, Arkansas, to Ruff “R.L.” and Ethel Goodwin Spencer. On December 2, 1942, Paul married the love of his life, Shirley Ann Smith.

They were married for seventy-six years. Paul was a loving husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, great grandfather, neighbor, and friend. He was a long-time member of the Brakebill Church of Christ where he served as an Elder for forty-five years.

Paul proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, from 1943-1946. He also worked as a rural mail carrier for Warm Springs, Reyno, and Success, Arkansas, for thirty-one years. Paul loved baseball, and was honored to play with numerous professionals during his lifetime.

He also was an avid fisherman and hunter. In addition, Paul loved horses and cattle ranching. Paul is preceded in death by his parents, Ruff “R.L.” and Ethel Goodwin Spencer; sister, Pearl Jones; and son-in-law, Shawn Walker.

Paul is survived by his wife of seventy-six years, Shirley Ann Smith Spencer, of the home; son, Jeff (Becky) Spencer, of Jonesboro; two daughters, Paula (Don) Hicks, of Cabot, and Jennifer (Tom) Chaligoj, of Doniphan, Missouri; grandchildren, Sara (Allison Beard) Walker, of Jonesboro, Steven (Ashley) Spencer, of Jonesboro, Laura (Clayton) Fry, of Cabot, David Hicks, of Rogers, Erica Chaligoj, of Columbia, Missouri, Ashley Chaligoj, of Columbia, Missouri, and Ashton Brann, of Swifton; great grandchildren, Connor Beard, Spencer Walker, Brianna Walker-Beard, Charlee Walker-Beard, A.J. Walker-Beard, Bladyn Walker-Beard, Layton Spencer, Camden Spencer, Will Fry, Harrison Fry, and Avery Brann; and in-law, LaDonna Howerton, of Jonesboro. All services will be held in the chapel of the Fears Family Funeral Home, in Pocahontas, on Friday, March 15, 2019. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm.

Paul’s funeral service will immediately follow, beginning at 3:00 pm; Gerald Fears, officiating. Burial will follow in the Maynard Cemetery. Carrying Paul to his final earthly resting place will be Steven Spencer, David Hicks, Will Fry, Spencer Walker, Gary Hart, and Charles Jarrett.

The family wishes to respectfully designate the Gang at the Maynard Pitch House and Maynard Café as honorary pallbearers.
