Peggy Ann Champion, 75, of Great Falls, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, December 23, 2018. Per her final wishes, cremation has been entrusted to Croxford Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest at the Herreid City Cemetery in South Dakota at a later date.

Peg was born on April 10, 1943 in Eureka, SD to parents Wilbert Henry Huber and Ruth Fisher Huber. She grew up Herreid, SD where she attended school, later graduating from Herreid High School in May of 1961. She continued on through college earning an associate degree in Business.

Shortly thereafter in November of 1963, she married Patrick J. Omland. Together they had one son, Terence Omland. A few years later, they divorced.

As Peggy continued through life, she later met Melvin A. Champion, who became the love of her life. They met in Rapid City, SD, at the Wheel Inn in Black Hills. And from there, they were inseparable.

On August 6, 1971, while Melvin was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base, the happy couple got married. Together, their blended family was further blessed with the addition of Mel’s daughter, Cheryl Champion Sammons. Peg and Melvin lived in Rapid City for three years, but later moved to Great Falls where they remained for the last 44 years.

Peg was a teller in banking. And throughout her career, having worked in various banks in SD and more yet in Great Falls, received numerous awards for her customer service and skills as a Lead Teller. All throughout her life, Peggy had a genuine love for life.

She enjoyed the outdoors, camping, and fishing. And she had a love for animals that reached well into the age of 60 when she and a close friend, Bonnie Larsen, rode elephants at a Shriners Circus. Peg also enjoyed time spent mowing the yard, working on crossword puzzles, reading, and was an avid supporter of charitable organizations.

She was a blessing to her husband Melvin, a loving mother, sister, and dear friend to all who knew her. Peg and Melvin had an amazing 47 years together before her passing. Her life here with us will be missed, but always remembered.

Peg is survived in passing by her beloved husband, Melvin Champion; son, Terence A. (Ginger) Omland of Miles City, MT; daughter, Cheryl L. Sammons of Toledo, OH; sister, Debra R. (Barry) Larson; brother, Robert A. (Marcia) Huber; niece, Erika M. Larson, Dena G. (Arnie) Hanson; nephew, Preston W. (Kayla) Huber all of Herreid, SD; numerous grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbert and Ruth Huber; sister, Judy Haux-Caudle, and by her grandparents. The family asks that donations be made to any Children’s Organization or to a local organization for homeless/abused animals.
