Phyllis’ Obituary Dr. Phyllis Delores Cradle Walker “A Doctorate is earned not given” Phyllis D. Cradle Walker, was born June 27, 1945 in White Plains, NY. to the late William P. Cradle, Sr. and Alqueen Fuller. She entered into eternal rest on January 5, 2019, at the Brian Center Gastonia, North Carolina.
She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior early in life and was baptized in Calvary Baptist Church in White Plains, New York. She was a resident of Belmont, North Carolina and attended Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. Phyllis graduated from White Plains High School as the Salutatorian of her graduating class.
She furthered her education earning degrees from Westchester Community College, State University of New York – Stony Brook, University of Connecticut and culminating with her Doctorate from Brandies University Dr. Walker was a Certified Clinical Social Worker. She founded Phyllis Walker and Associates an employment agency based out of Hartford, Conn. The primary focus was the placement of young African American students into professional careers.
In 1991 she relocated to Charlotte, North Carolina and opened Almetas Bookstore named in honor of her grandmother; featuring books and art work by African Americans. Phyllis later returned back to Social Work creating Access Behavioral Services where along with her staff of young black professionals counseled hired, mentored and developed future African American Social Workers who just graduated college. Because she was an avid reader and there was not a book she would not open, it opened her mind to adventure.
This would lead her to love of travel, which she accomplished visiting numerous places statewide and abroad. She was also an art collector, accumulating numerous collectibles, paintings, sculptures, artifacts, china and trinkets. Phyllis enjoyed the finer things in life.
Phyllis was an extremely charitable and giving individual in all places she resided. She was a member of quite a few organizations always giving of her talent for the betterment of the cause, volunteering her time, energy and res. One of the organizations she held true to her heart was Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated.
The principles and tenants of the Sorority, Scholarship, Service, Sisterly Love, and Finer Womanhood were evident in her daily encounter with society. To cherish her memory she is survived by her sons Ronald Jr. “Foots”, Duane (Patricia); grandchildren Ronald Walker III “Trey”, Grayce Walker, Brothers William Cradle Jr, Ronald Cradle, Donnell Cradle and Aunt Verdell Hilliard, as well as a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
