Pierre’s Obituary Pierre Solman LaPointe Jr. “Maka Kahomni” was born on August 21, 1950 at Mother of Grace hospital in Gregory, SD to Pierre and Josephine (Andrews) LaPointe Sr. Pierre started his spiritual journey to eternal rest on March 9, 2019 at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls at the age of 68 years 7 months with his loving family and friends by his side. Pierre lived in many places, Hamill, Gregory, Winner growing up. In the late 50’s-early 60’s the family made their home at the Episcopal Church parsonage along the Ponca Creek in Milk’s Camp.
His grandparents Jesse & Mercy Andrews lived across the creek, which made it easy for him to spend time with them and his aunts and uncles. He spent his childhood in Milk’s Camp community. He attended elementary school at St. Charles Public School, graduating from 8th grade in May 1965, attended Bonesteel High School into his senior year, at which time his father made his spiritual journey leaving Pierre man of the house to help his mother.
Pierre was a great athlete in school. He participated in track, basketball and baseball. His main interest was running track.
During the summer months he played on the “Ponca 49ers” softball team. He was quick in his playing shortstop. At the time of his passing he was the last of the “49ers” players.
He was proud and shared with his granddaughter Latisha stories of his softball playing days. In 1974 he met the love of his life, Amy Freeman, they married on April 27, 1979 in Burke. To this union 3 children were born- Crystal, Priscilla, and Lance.
Pierre has been a hard worker all his life, as a young man he worked with the neighborhood youth camp in Milk’s Camp. After he left school, he worked at Milk’s Camp Industries, 1970-1990. In the early 90’s he employed at Bonesteel School system.
In 1992 he started his employment at Fort Randall Casino until his health led to his retirement in 2019, 27 years of employment, he enjoyed his job. It took encouragement from his family and friends to finally decide it was time to retire. Everyone in Pierre’s life knew him as “Brick/Bricky”.
His grandfather, Joshua Stone Arrow, gave him the nickname as Brick’s hair was a reddish color when he was born. Pierre’s best friends were his grandpas Jesse Sr. and Joshua. He enjoyed talking and spending time with them, listening to their stories of their younger days.
Pierre was preceded in death by his parents, Pierre Sr. and Josephine (Andrews) La Pointe. Grandparents Jesse Sr. and Mercy (Stone Arrow) Andrews. Sisters, Almeda (Rosie) La Pointe, Regina Bad Horse, brother Marvin La Pointe, nephews Marvin Jr, Myron Charging Hawk, niece Margaret LaPointe, uncle Hampton Andrews, Aunts Caroline Andrews, Margaret Williams and Donna Beare He is survived by his wife Amy, daughters Crystal (Dave) Coenen, Bonesteel Priscilla (Rudy) Ulrich, Lake Andes and son Lance, Bonesteel.
Grandchildren, Latisha and Hannah Coenen, Raven, Tori and Donald Irvin. Pierre’s pride and joy, his sidekick-great grandson Braxton His sisters- Shirley (Alfred) Old Lodge, Bonesteel Wanda Miner-Yankton, Norma Kornokovich-Redfield and brother Loren (Barb) La Pointe-Wagner. Uncle Jesse Andrews-Sioux Falls, Aunts Joyce Andrews-Bonesteel, Rita Carlson and Wini Andrews-Chamberlain, Nieces Nicole La Pointe (Jojo, Olowan, Evelyn) Cheyenne Rena La Pointe, Vanessa La Pointe, Emma Bad Horse (Heaven).
Nephews Todd, Larry, Gerald Jr., Donovan Charging Hawk, Freddie and Myron Old Lodge, Chad and Glenn La Pointe, Marcus and Daniel (Wendy) Bad Horse, Cody La Pointe, Dakotah (Jessica) and Tristan La Pointe, Ray Kornokovich. Pierre has 32 grandkids, 8 great grandkids, many cousins, nieces and nephews who will all miss him.
