Obituary for Rafael “Ralph” Damian Curbelo Rafael “Ralph” Damian Curbelo, 79, of Waldorf, MD passed away on Friday, June 29, 2018 at the Hospice of Charles County in Waldorf, MD. He was born in Victoria de Las Tunas, Cuba on September 27, 1938 to the late Rafael and Stella Curbelo, Sr He is also preceded in death by his grandparents, Dr. Bernard and Ida Manduley and Ricardo and Ramona Curbelo; parents-in-law, William and Marcella Heidinger, Sr.; brother-in-law, William Roger Heidinger; and many aunts and uncles.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 52 years, Barbara Curbelo; his daughters, Marcella Savage (Thomas) and Theresa Curbelo; his brothers, Robert Curbelo and Roland Curbelo (Judy); his best friend of 65 years, William Davis; his “Honorary” grandchildren, Joseph and Julie; and a host of other relatives and friends. In 1945, he traveled with his parents from Cuba to Tennessee and shortly thereafter moved to Washington, DC. He graduated from Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, DC in 1957.
In 1960, he enlisted in the United States Army Reserve and was a Private E-2 with the 80th Training Division. Due to a medical disability, he was honorably discharged in 1962. During his professional life, he worked as a Cashier and Accounting/Purchasing Clerk at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC and as an associate for a private insurance company in Silver Spring, MD.
He then spent 23 years as an Accounting Clerk at the Washington Gas Light Company in Washington, DC and retired on medical disability in 1992. He enjoyed history and politics, watching sporting events (including the Washington Nationals, the Washington Redskins, and World Wrestling Entertainment), dining at his favorite restaurants, listening to country and oldies music, and reading the newspaper. He especially enjoyed helping his wife with babysitting children during his retirement years and caring for his numerous pets.
He had a “Heart of Gold” and was very charitable to many people and non-profit organizations. He was also a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Waldorf, MD. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 from 2-4PM and 6-8PM at Raymond Funeral Service, 5635 Washington Avenue, La Plata, MD and where a Funeral Service will also be held on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at 11AM.
Interment to follow at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Waldorf, MD. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, or the American Diabetes Association.
