Reverend Donald Wayne Large February 03, 1938 – March 19, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guest Book| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Gate City, VA Donald Wayne Large, 81 Reverend Donald Wayne Large, age 81, of Gate City, Virginia passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2019. He was a member of the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church. He had pastored the South Coeburn and Crab Orchard churches in Coeburn and the Midway and Prospect churches in Gate City.

He attended the Midway Memorial United Methodist Church, where he had served as choir director since his retirement. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Carson Newman College, his Master of Science degree from East Tennessee State University, a doctorate degree in education from NOVA University, and graduated from Duke University’s School of Divinity. Prior to his ministry, he had been a teacher, principal, and administrator in Russell County Public Schools.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. and Mrs. W. T. Large; an infant son, Donald Wayne Large, Jr.; an infant grandson, Will Franklin Lehe; brothers Troy Large and Russell Large; sisters June Chase, Kay Hord, Emma White, Charlotte Mullins; an infant brother and two infant sisters. Surviving him are his wife of 57 years, Margaret Maine Large; son James Andrew Large of Wolcott, Indiana; daughters Lydia Large of Gate City and Karen Lehe of Monticello, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Ross and Taylor Sutherland, Gavin Large, and Micah, Holly, Courtney and Luke Lehe; great-grandchildren Amelia, Lance and Jon-Ross Sutherland; a sister, Mary Helen Porter of Wytheville; many nieces and nephews; and special family members Keith Robertson, Shannon Riddell, and Krista Davis.

A celebration of his life will be held at Midway Memorial United Methodist Church, 5532 Veterans Memorial Hwy, Gate City, Va. on Friday, March 22 at 7:00pm with the Rev. Janet Sweet officiating and music provided by the Midway Memorial UMC choir.

The family will receive visitors beginning at 3:00pm at the church prior to the celebration and will welcome visitors to the residence at any time.
