Rhoda Dewitt Mills , January 11, 1921 — August 29, 2018

Rhoda DeWitt Mills passed away peacefully on August 29, 2018 in Napa, CA. She was born January 11, 1921 in Orange, New Jersey to Ellis Franklin DeWitt and Clara Glendora Bayly DeWitt. She grew up in Takoma Park, Maryland and graduated from Wilson Teachers College in 1943 in Washington DC.

When America entered WWII, Rhoda joined the Waves, the women’s branch of the Navy. She served as a mail clerk in the San Francisco office. After the war, Rhoda used the GI Bill to earn her master’s degree in Psychiatric Social Work from Boston University in 1948.

She had fallen in love with California and the Bay area and so she applied for a social work position and was hired first in Modesto, where she met and married her husband, George in 1951. She worked at other locations in the Bay Area before settling in Napa. Rhoda worked for many years at the State Hospital there before retiring in 1986, just a year after her husband passed away.

She enjoyed traveling and toured most of the world and America. When she decided to stop driving, she moved to the Meadows and lived there happily for twelve years. She was a faithful member of the Napa Valley Center for Spiritual Living, serving as a Practitioner and helped many in that position.

She will be missed by her nieces Carol Newman (John) of 410 Clement Place, Wheaton, MD 20902, and Virginia (Ginny) Bryant of 503 SW 21st Street, Okeechobee, FL 34974, six grand nieces and their children, extended family, as well as many friends. A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Napa Valley Center for Spiritual Living at 1249 Coombs Street, Napa, CA 94559 at 1:30 pm.
