Richard Corey Mansfield, beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather born July 18, 1924, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family May 14, 2019. He attended schools in Newport NH, where he was active in school government, a member of the band and orchestra and captained the ski team. After graduation in 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army’s 10th Mountain Division and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and Bronze Star Medal during the fighting in the North Apennine Mountains of Italy.

After the war he received bachelor and masters degrees from the University of New Hampshire, where he was a member of the ski team and the “Wildcats” dance band. Subsequently he was awarded an MBA from Temple University. He was employed by the Rohm and Haas Co. of Philadelphia as a research chemist for 35 years.

During that time he authored numerous scientific papers and was awarded two dozen United States Patents. He was instrumental in the development of biodegradable surfactants derived from sugar, as well as many other products used in industry, the home and medicine. He was a member emeritus of the American Chemical Society and was active in church and civic affairs, serving for many years on the Board of Deacons at South Congregational Church in Newport and as a member of the Grantham Zoning Board.

He is survived by his wife, Genevieve, who nurtured, counseled and supported him during 68 years of a happy and faithful marriage, four sons and their spouses–Charles, of Durham, NC, Robert, of Vermontville, MI, Paul, of Houston, TX, and Lawrence, of Radnor, PA, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a sister, Helen Eason, of Jacksonville, Fla. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Richard’s name to South Congregational Church, 20 Church Street, Newport, NH 03773. A memorial service will be held at South Congregational Church on June 8, 2019 at 11 AM.
