Richard “Dick” Champion, 89, of Fremont, passed away on Thursday, November 29th at Parkview Supportive Care Unit, Randallia. Dick was born September 12, 1929 in rural Angola, Indiana, the son of John and Margery (Wells) Champion. Dick married A. Jeanette (Stackhouse) Champion in Edon, Ohio on October 16, 1954.

Together they shared 64 years of marriage and were blessed with a daughter and son. DIck graduated from Fremont High School. He served in the army during the Korean War as a high speed radio operator at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey.

He retired after 50 years with the Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers, Local #2. After retiring, he and Jeanette spent their winters in Florida, where he guided for fishermen on Lake Okeechobee. Dick attended SonLight Community Church and was a member of the Orland American Legion Post #423 and the Fremont Moose Lodge #2387.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends. Dick is survived by his wife, Jeanette; daughter, Cynthia (Robert) Ax of Fremont, and son, Jeffrey (Karen) Champion of Fremont; four grandchildren, Laura (Korey) Harris of Coldwater, Michigan, Matthew Ax of Fremont, Cody (Sarah) Champion of Lisbon Falls, Maine, and Lucas (Olivia) Champion of Pierceton, Indiana; and two great-granddaughters, Danika and Kate Harris of Coldwater, Michigan; a sister, Anna Walters of Angola; brothers Dale (Diane) Champion of Angola, Tom (Connie) Champion of Fremont; and a sister-in-law, Mickie Champion of Fremont. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Lynn Champion, and a brother-in-law, Darrel Walters.

A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 pm, Sunday, December 16th, at SonLight Community Church, CR 200 W, Angola. Memorials contributions may be made to Parkview Supportive Care Unit, Randallia, or to Mooseheart Child City and School. A private family inurnment will take place on a later date at Marion National Cemetery with military graveside services.
