Obituary for Mr. Richard Young Howle Richard “Dick” Young Howle, 64, went to be with his beloved Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 8, 2018. A resident of Sandy Run, SC, he was a native of Hartsville, SC. He is survived by his wife, Millie E. Howle, of Sandy Run; daughters, E. Catherine Gordon (Taylor) and Elizabeth “Libby” H. Bridges (Jon); his precious grandchildren, Jack Langston Bridges, Benjamin Faulkner Bridges, Caroline Cecile Bridges, and Paul Hart Gordon, all of Lexington, SC.
He is also survived by brother, Harry G. Howle, Jr. (Claire) of Vero Beach, Florida, and sisters Rebecca H. Benson (Frank) of Hartsville, SC, Jane H. Howell (David) of Florence, SC, Teresa H. Whitlock, of Florence, SC, Judy H. Truett (Doug) of Hartsville, SC, and sister-in-law, Sheri Fidler, of Sumter, SC and by many beloved nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins. Dick was predeceased by his loving parents, Harry G. and Emma G. “Cissy” Howle of Hartsville, SC and beloved brother, Thomas F. Howle, of Asheville, NC. Dick attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated Hartsville High School, where he loved being a member of the Red Foxes Football Team.
He was a proud graduate of Clemson University with a degree in business and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. His career was spent in residential and commercial construction, as President of Howle Construction Co. for many years. He was a former member of First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, SC, where he served as a deacon and children’s Sunday School teacher.
He had been a member of Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church, Lexington, SC, in recent years where he was a choir member, and member of the Kerygma Sunday School Class. Dick loved watching college football, particularly his Clemson Tigers, being outdoors enjoying God’s creation, music, reading, and spending time with family and friends. Dick will be missed by so many, but will be remembered for his love of God, his love for family, friends, and his fellow man.
His quick wit, selflessness, joyful spirit, and kindness endeared him to everyone he encountered. He was loved by so many. The family would like to thank Dr. Rudolph Wise (retired), Dr. Woodrow Coker, the staff and nursing team of SC Oncology Associates, as well as Dr. Hans Lee of MD Anderson (Houston, TX) for their tremendous care, love, and support as Dick courageously battled multiple myeloma over these last few years.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SCOA Cares Foundation, 166 Stoneridge Drive Columbia, SC 29210; or to the building debt retirement fund of Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church, 5503 Sunset Blvd Lexington, SC 29072. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 12, 2018 at Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church, 5503 Sunset Blvd, Lexington, SC 29072, with burial in Woodridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from one hour prior to the service in the Fellowship Hall.
