Robert D Bob Thomas, June 06, 1925 — February 05, 2019

UTICA – Mr. Robert D. “Bob” Thomas, age 93, passed away on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at MVHS at St. Luke’s Healthcare with his loving family by his side. Born in Utica on June 6, 1925, Robert was the son of the late Jeremiah and Luella (Gibeau) Thomas. He was raised and educated in Utica.

One day, as he was roller skating, Bob met the love of his life, Mary Demkowitch, and on May 14, 1949 wedding bells were ringing as they were married. They shared their lives and their love for 67 years prior to Mary’s passing on June 15, 2016. As a young man, Bob worked at the New York Central Railroad System roundhouse in Utica.

In his earlier years he held positions with local breweries, and Griffiss Air Force Base as a steamfitter, the position from which he retired at age 55. Because he was a very loving husband and father, he always went the distance for his family. Blessed with a sharp mind, a skill with tools, and a steady hand, he considered himself a jack-of-all-trades.

He enjoyed camping with his wife and family, and they shared many memorable trips, especially to the St. Lawrence River. Robert is survived by his daughter, Linda K. Colangelo of North Utica; his grandchildren, Frank C. Grossi, and Sarah M. Colangelo, both of Utica; and his great-grandchildren, Gianna Grossi, Sophia Grossi, and Dominic Colangelo. He also leaves his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends, Judy and Ernie DeCola.

He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Francis A. Colangelo in 2001; his brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Jennie Thomas; and his infant sister. Appreciation is extended to the physicians and staff of MVHS at St. Luke’s Healthcare, as well as dear friends Peter and Joanne Sait. In keeping with Bob’s wishes, all services will be held privately.
