Robert E. Lane (Bob) passed away on January 23, 2019 at the age of 91. Probably the nicest, kindest, most gentle, loving man we have ever known. Bob was born in El Paso, Texas on August 21, 1927.
He was graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio and attended Texas A& M where after finishing his freshman year at age 17, he enlisted in the Navy “to go fight the war”. He was in Boot Camp in Great Lakes, Illinois when the bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He served one more year and then returned to Texas A&M where he graduated with a BS in Civil Engineering in 1948 with his original class.
He then began a career with Humble Oil Company, later becoming Exxon, where he retired in 1986 as a Senior Staff Engineer in the Production Department in New Orleans after 38 years of service. A great husband, father and grandfather he gave many hours of volunteer service with the Boy Scouts and in coaching his children’s ball teams where he said it “built character”. Professionally, he served as Chairman of the Louisiana Section of the American Congress on Survey and Mapping and was an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
After retirement, he and Delitha moved to Tchefuncta Club Estates in Covington where they spent 33 wonderful years. Bob enjoyed playing tennis and golf, served as an Elder at New Covenant Presbyterian church and as President of Tchefuncta Club Estates. Retirement was great and his life was blessed.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Delitha Stewart Lane and his four children: Robert E. Lane, Jr ( Ellen) and sons Ryan ( Michelle), Andrew and Michael; James B. Lane (Laura) and sons Benjamin and Jonathan; daughter Patricia Lane and children Lane and Max Fernandez; and his youngest son Scott D. Lane (Candice) and daughters Samantha and Natalia. He is also survived by four great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents Connie B. Lane and Anita Floy Lane, his brother Connie B. Lane, Jr and his first wife June Denard Lane who passed away in 1952.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Covington Presbyterian Church with visitation at Noon and worship service at 1 p.m. A reception at Tchefuncta Country Club will follow the ceremony. Special thanks to the staff of Beau Provence and Passages Hospice for their loving care during his final years.
