Robert’s Obituary Robert F. Carney, aka Papa Carney, 84 of Hanover and formerly of Hanson, passed away on March 18, 2019. Born on July 23, 1934 in Boston, he was the son of the late Robert F. Carney Sr. and Jane E. (Buckley) Carney. Robert proudly served our country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.

After his service, he was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds, but left to get married. Still an avid baseball fan, he pursued a career as a police officer for 27 years with the Boston Police Department, retiring in 1988. He enjoyed traveling; especially to Hawaii and Florida.

Most of all, Robert loved spending time with his grandchildren. Robert was the beloved husband of the late Rita I. (Hudson) Carney. Proud stepfather of Beverly Russo of Waltham, Diane Russo of OH, Patricia (Russo) Borden of Whitman, Stephen Russo of NV, Darlene (Russo) Regan of Hanson, Alan Russo of Stoneham, Bryan Russo of Marshfield, James Carney of Wakefield, and the late Robert F. Carney, Jr. of Marshfield.

Dear brother of the late Margaret, William, Ronald, and Lorraine. Grandfather of many cherished grandchildren. Robert is also survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as his friends he enjoyed spending time with at Barstow Village the past 3 years.

Visiting hours in the Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington St. Rte. 53, Hanover, on Friday, March 22nd from 4-7pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary of the Sacred Heart Church, 392 Hanover St. Rte.

139, Hanover on Saturday at 9am. Burial to follow with Military Honors at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree. Also in attendance will be the Boston Patrolman’s Association.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Robert’s memory can be made to Friends of the Hanover Council on Aging, 665 Center St, Hanover MA 02339 or to the Friends of the Kingston Council on Aging, 30 Evergreen Street, Kingston MA 02364.
