OBITUARY Robert Joseph Newcombe October 30, 1934 – February 4, 2019 Robert Joseph Newcombe Sr. (Newk) 84, of New Bern , North Carolina died Monday, February 4th 2019 at Carolina East Medical Center. He was born in East Orange, New Jersey on October 30, 1934. He was the son of the late Mary (McKenny) Newcombe and Lawrence J. Newcombe.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 47 years, Barbara (Drahos) and an infant son, as well as brothers, James and Lawrence and sisters, Marion Smith, and Francis MacAloon. He is survived by his children, Amy Holder of Middle Smithfield Twp. , PA, Nancy Falcone of New Bern, Robert Newcombe and his wife Alison of New Bern, Patrick Newcombe of Kentucky, Keri Steinfeldt and husband Joshua of Onalaska, Wisconsin; two sisters, Patricia Kenney of Tinton Falls, New Jersey and Regina Kapica of Manahawkin, New Jersey; 13 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, many wonderful nieces and nephews and his much-loved dog, Barney the basset hound.

Bob was a 1954 graduate of Clifford J. Scott high school where he played football. After high school he enlisted in the United States Navy and was trained as a field medic serving with the 9th Marines, 3rd Division. He served as an East Orange New Jersey fireman from 1959 to 1968.

After moving to New Bern from Point Pleasant Boro, New Jersey in 1987, Bob became active in the DAV and was the first coordinator/driver for Eastern North Carolina. He and Barbara worked together, scheduling and driving disabled veterans from eastern Carolina to the VA Hospital in Durham. Bob loved all sports, especially football.

His favorite teams were Notre Dame and the New York Giants but only when they were winning! He was an avid fisherman and had a passion for playing golf. A wake will be held on Monday, February 11, 2019 from 5pm to 7pm at Cotten Funeral Home, 2201 Neuse Blvd, New Bern, North Carolina.

A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday February 12, 2019 at 10 am at St. Paul Catholic Church, 3005 Country Club Road, New Bern. Burial will follow the mass at 2pm at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, North Carolina. A memorial mass will be scheduled in New Jersey in early spring.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the DAV, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, Ohio 45250 or www. dav.org. Arrangements are by Cotten Funeral Home & Crematory.
