Roger Gilbert Roeder was born February 9, 1930, to Fred and Esther (Medenwaldt) Roeder in Hankinson, ND. He attended school in Hankinson and worked on the family farm.

On March 20, 1952, Roger entered the U.S. Army and was stationed in Washington, DC. He was honorably discharged on March 19, 1954, earning the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. After returning home, he stayed in agricultural jobs, starting at the New Effington, SD, Grain Elevator.

On October 28, 1954, Roger married the love of his life, Doris Wagner, in New Effington. In 1957, they moved to Rosholt and Roger worked at the Farmers Co-op Elevator until his retirement in 1995. Doris passed away August 18, 2012.

Roger loved spending time with his family and friends, playing cards or games. He enjoyed just going out for a drive to look at the fields or go visiting. His car saw many trips to the casino, where he and Doris had even won a new car!

He told many stories of growing up in the Depression era and of the 3-day blizzards when they had to find the buried car with bamboo fishing poles. Roger’s children meant the world to him. He was our hero when he was a bone marrow donor for his daughter, Becky, when she was battling leukemia.

Roger was an honest, hard-working, down-home kind of man who always had a smile and we will miss him every day. Survivors include his daughter, Paulette (Keith) Schmitz of Wheaton; son, Jon (Gayle) Roeder of Rosholt; granddaughter, Tracey (Adam) Schmitz; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie (Kalvin) Schmitz and Alexander Schmitz; great-great-grandson, Levi Meidinger; son-in-law, David Reineke of Parkers Prairie, MN; and sisters, Elaine (Tony) Oster of Lidgerwood, ND, Janice (Joe) Polansky of Mandan, ND, and Sharon (Harry) Michlitsch of Webster, SD.
