Romaine Houghton October 17, 1927 – March 10, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook MONTPELIER Romaine M. Houghton (Pop/Poppy), who most recently resided at Heaton Woods in Montpelier, passed away on Sunday, March 10th. Romaine was born on October 17, 1927. He grew up, and attended schools, in Marshfield.

Following his service in the U.S. Navy, Romaine began working for the State of Vermont in 1947; he retired from there in 1988. He married Arlene Morse on February 7, 1953, and they resided in Berlin for over 50 years. Arlene passed in 2001.

Romaine was known for being a jokester and although a quiet man, he always had a quick and witty sense of humor. Pop enjoyed doing his own maintenance on his vehicles and lawn tractor/mowers, but when it came to home repairs, the family joke was that as long as he had a roll of duct tape and a tube of black cement (goop), he could “almost” fix anything. He is survived by his two daughters, Linda Houghton (Susan Hamilton) of Dallas, Texas; and Sandra (Michael) Pitonyak of Berlin; grandchildren Douglas Gordon of Berlin, Chad (Janna) Gordon of Troutman, North Carolina, and Van Lee of Dallas; and great grandchildren Aubrey and Liam Gordon of Berlin.

Besides his wife of 48 years, Romaine was also predeceased by his grandson, Justin Paul (JP) Gordon in 2010. The family would like to thank all of the staff at Heaton Woods and CVHHH for their incredible support and loving care for their loved one, as well as the family. At Romaine’s request, there will be no calling hours or memorial service.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Those wishing to express online condolences may do so at www. guareandsons.com, and memorial contributions may be made to Heaton Woods’ Activities Fund, 10 Heaton Street, Montpelier, VT 05602, or Almost Home Dog Rescue and Rehab, 1067 Junction Road, Berlin, VT 05602.
