Roscoe J. “Bud” Pumphrey, 92, of Massillon, passed away peacefully but rather unexpectedly, on Tuesday evening, March 12, 2019. Born in Weston, West Virginia, February 17, 1927, a son to the late Orvil T. and Anna Fay (Camel) Pumphrey, Bud had been an area resident for most of his adult life. An honorably discharged veteran of the US Air Force, he retired from the maintenance department of Apple Creek Developmental Center and had been a faithful and very active member of Anchor Baptist Church in Massillon.

An undeniably hard worker, he kept busy well into his retirement and could always find a project to occupy his time. He raised Coonhounds and loved hunting and the outdoors; he enjoyed mowing the grass and found pleasure in having a yard that looked “just right;” and he tried to never miss the radio broadcast of an Indian’s game. More than these, his true joy came from his wife and family.

A devoted husband, dad, grandpa, great-grandpa and great-great-grandpa, Bud would arrange his schedule so not to miss any events in the lives of any of the children. Whatever the activity, he was their biggest fan and most enthusiastic supporter – and he was always there. Predeceased by his parents; sisters, Mary, Ethel, Oleta, Betty May and Merle; brothers, Paul, Frank and Jim and two other siblings who died in infancy; Bud is survived by his wife, Susan (Graham) Pumphrey, of the residence; their children, Janet (Bob) Crites, of Apple Creek, BJ (Karen) Pumphrey, Mike (Cindy) Pumphrey and Robert Pumphrey (and Stacy Cowen), all of Wooster, Daniel (Deanna) Beadle and Brenda Pumphrey, all of Perry Township and Kelly (Devin) Williams, of Massillon.

Also surviving are 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren and his brother, Roger (Liz) Pumphrey, also of Wooster. Funeral services will be conducted at the noon hour on Friday, March 15, 2019, at Atkinson Feucht Hare Funeral Home in Massillon. Pastor Mark Jacobs will officiate and burial with military honors will follow at Brookfield Cemetery.

The family will receive condolences Friday morning from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to advance the mission and ministry of Anchor Baptist Church in Massillon.
