Obituary for Rosella Frances “Rose” Lampson Mrs. Rosella Frances (VanderKlok) Lampson died at the Heartwood Lodge Hospice House on May 30, 2018 in Spring Lake at the age of 91. Rose was diagnosed with bone cancer of the jaw in early January and bravely accepted the terminal diagnosis. After much thought and consideration she shared, “Then, what I need to do now is be a good example of courage for my children”.
She stayed true to her promise. She remained brave beyond measure, strong in her Christian faith, and considerate of others until her last Earthly breath. Rose was born on May 2nd 1927 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Her parents Ralph and Marie VanderKlok emigrated from the Netherlands to New York July 4th, 1923. Choosing to make Grand Rapids their new home, Ralph and Marie brought eight children into the world. Rose was the eldest.
Rose graduated from Union High School in 1946. She married the love of her life Robert Lampson on December 21, 1951. The couple settled in Grand Haven, built a business Lampson Brother’s Produce, and raised five children.
Rose was a full-time stay-at-home mother devoting her entire life to her family. She was a gentle, kind, caring mother who worked tirelessly and encouraged her children to pursue their hopes and dreams. When Rose’s husband Robert became ill in 1999, Rose spent 18 months attending to his emotional, spiritual, and physical needs.
She was unwavering in her total devotion. When he died in 2001 Rose was questioned about the difficulty of the task. She simply said, “I’d gladly do it for another 100 years.
200 years. I’d do it forever”. Rose was an active member of The United Methodist Church of The Dunes for over 60 years.
She taught Sunday school and Bible School. Rose was a member of Esther Circle and worked on many church committees and Kiwanis. She loved the music of the Gaither Gospel Singers.
Rose especially enjoyed musical messages of inspiration and testimony. Rose loved to travel with her husband and friends. During the cold winter months, Rose and Bob enjoyed taking refuge in southern Florida while visiting their oldest daughter Susan and Susan’s family.
Rose was a voracious reader and enjoyed all genres but had a special passion for historical stories of the south. Gone With The Wind was one of her all-time favorite books. She applied the novel’s themes of perseverance and overcoming adversity throughout her adult life.
Rose is lovingly remembered by her children Susan (Ron) Rosema, Carol (Tom) Bauer, Lisa (John) Emmert, and James Lampson. She is also lovingly remembered by her siblings Jack VanderKlok, Frances Dyer, Ralph (Marilyn) VanderKlok, Andrew (Joyce) VanderKlok, Herbert VanderKlok, and Marilyn VanderLind. Rose’s legacy includes 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Rose was preceded in death by Robert her husband of 49 years, a daughter Sandra Kay Mack, her parents Ralph and Marie VanderKlok, and a brother Jim VanderKlok. Our family has been blessed with many kindnesses during this difficult time. Thank you to the kindergarteners and their parents who understood when the teacher went missing.
Thank you to the girls at Down To Earth for covering last-minute shift changes. Thank you to our friends. You sustained us through the toughest of times.
Thank you to Pastor Eldon Eldred and The United Methodist Church of The Dunes. The cards, bedside visits, flowers, prayers, and beautiful hand-knit afghan kept our mother strong in Christian faith – even while her body weakened. Rose’s family is forever grateful to Hospice of North Ottawa Community for the many months of at-home care they provided.
Thank you Doctor VanderHeide, Debbie, Kim, Sandy, and Susan for giving us direction, strength, sanity, and many much-needed hugs. The family is also deeply grateful to the staff at the Heartwood Lodge Hospice House. Thank you Doctor VanderHeide, Amanda, Andrea, Ashley, Barb, Diane, Estelle, Gale, Gloria, Kim, Linda, Lori, Pam, Sandy, Sharon, Susan, Terra, Tim, and the many other caregivers and volunteers who surrounded our mother with around-the-clock care and love, thus enabling our mother to leave this Earth with grace and dignity.
Thank you for holding us especially close when Sandra – our dear sister and Rose’s daughter – unexpectedly passed. You are surely Earth’s angels. A celebration of Rosella’s life and her daughter Sandra’s life is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at The United Methodist Church of The Dunes with visitation one hour prior to the service.
Pastor Lou Grettenberger and Pastor Eldon Eldred will officiate the ceremony. Donations in Rose’s memory can be made to The United Methodist Church of The Dunes or Hospice of North Ottawa Community. Share memories with the family at their online guest book at www.
