Roy’s Obituary Born in Houston, Texas, on August 23, 1942, Roy is the son of Lex E. and Martha Young Ward. Roy had one older brother, Everett B. Ward, who along with his parents, precede him in death. Shortly after the end of WWII, the Ward family moved to the Lampasas area where both boys graduated from Lampasas High School.

Roy was married to his high school sweetheart, Martha Frances Goodman, for 57 years. He is survived by his wife, Martha, (aka The Boss and Nanamomma), who survives him along with two daughters, Rebecca Hicks and Rachel (Mark) Dehn. Also surviving Nanapop are grandsons, Adam (Kristina) Hicks, Andrew Dehn, and one granddaughter, Madysen Dehn.

Two great-grandsons, Bentley Hicks and Heath Hicks, survive as well. After several years working in the then new computer technology field, Roy established Roy Ward Inc., a two-way radio sales, installation, and service business in Rockport, Texas, which he operated thirty years until retirement in 2004. They say you can take the boy out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the boy.

This was certainly true of Roy, and after retirement from the radio business, he acquired land in Goliad County and began another career in farming/ranching which continued until his death. On Sunday night, March 17, 2019, after two busy days of activities that he loved to do including building shooting backstops, testing self-loaded rounds to blow up tannerite past 200 yards, and shooting targets with his daughter, Roy had BBQ, went to Rachel’s barn to give a lesson on “properly” greasing tractor fittings, and was discussing weed killers when he fell over. No amount of CPR or more sophisticated measures by medical professionals were successful.

He passed away around 9 p.m…. in the barn…with greasy hands, leather work gloves in his pocket, and a full stomach. .

without one twinge of pain…AND with his boots on! Those who knew Roy well will appreciate this final Roy Ward day. Private burial is planned, and the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to Orange Grove Volunteer Fire Department who responded quickly, 211 South Eugenia, Orange Grove, Texas 78372 or the charitable organization of choice.
