Roy P. Crandall, of South Main St., Homer, died unexpectedly on June 2, 2018 at the age of 87. A lifelong area resident, he was born August 13, 1930, a son of the late Reno and Jennie Biel Crandall. Roy attended Homer Central.

He enlisted in the US Army and was assigned to the 11th Airborne 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) stationed in Japan. He remained close with the men he served with, attending many of the 11th Airborne Association reunions. Since 1953, Roy owned and operated Crandall’s Auto Service and Sales with his late wife Mary.

Roy could often be seen working 7 days a week, even during his final days. Roy was a former member of the Homer Fire Department. He also served several terms as a Homer Village Trustee and was a 40-year member of the Homer Lodge #2506 BPOE.

He collected antique cars and Jeep Willys. He loved racing and was inducted into the Tri-City Dragway’s Hall of Fame in 2013. As a paratrooper in the Army, he developed a love and respect for flying.

He was a licensed pilot, owning 17 airplanes throughout his life. Roy could often be heard saying “I’ve had a good life and I have no regrets”. Surviving are his two children, Bruce Crandall and Sharon Crandall Shattuck, both of Homer; four grandchildren, Samantha Crandall (Marcus Proulx), Tyler Crandall and Taryn Shattuck (Jamie Johnson) and Danielle Shattuck; his great grandson, Collin Johnson; loving friend, Jean Houck and many, many dear friends.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Mary Miller Crandall in 2000 and his sister, Marjorie M. Rogers in 2004. Along with a good friend, Beatrice Prezioso in 2015. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 11, 2018 at the Donald L. Barber Funeral Home, 5016 US Route 11, Homer.

Interment with Military Honors will follow in Glenwood Cemetery, Homer. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2:00 – 5:00 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions Mr. Crandall’s name may be directed to Honor Flight Syracuse, PO Box 591, Syracuse, NY 13209-0591.

This private, not-for-profit organization, served to honor America’s veterans by transporting them to Washington, D.C. to visit the national memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice.
