Ruby H. Clay, born in Washington, Wilkes County, GA, grew up in Atlanta, GA. Having most recently lived in Silver Spring, MD, she passed from this life on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at her home. She was 86 years old.

She attended David T. Howard High School, the second high school for Blacks in Atlanta at the time and graduated in 1949. She matriculated from Spelman College in 1954 with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She later received a Master’s degree in Education from Atlanta University in 1969.

Ruby loved education and having an impact on the lives of children. She especially loved reading and the impact it could have in children’s lives. She taught for over 30 years as a classroom teacher and a reading specialist.

On August 9, 1953, she married Augustus L. Clay, Jr. and together they had 4 children, Augustus L. Clay, III, Kathryn R. Clay, Karen M. Clay and Lisa H. Clay. They enjoyed a loving relationship of 70 years and was married for 65 years. Ruby was an active member of the Spelman Alumna Association and served as a Docent at the Spelman Museum.

She also was a member of various social organizations. She was a tithing member of Radcliff Presbyterian Church in Atlanta and St. Matthews Presbyterian Church when she and her husband relocated to Silver Spring. She was a lady of style and grace, a true gentle lady.

She is survived by her husband, daughters and grandson, Augustus L. Clay, IV. Her son predeceased her in 2015. A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at St. Matthews Presbyterian Church, 4001 Bel Pre Road in Silver Spring MD 20906 at 3pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in the name of Ruby Clay to the Spelman College Scholarship fund, Spelman College, Division of Institutional Advancement, 350 Spelman Lane, Box 1303 Atlanta, GA 30314-4399.
