Russell Ernest Campbell, Jr., passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 11, 2018, in Morris Plains, New Jersey. Affectionately known as “Bronc”, he was born on January 26, 1941 in Morris Plains to Russell and Shirley Campbell. , and spent most of his life there, a community he truly loved.
He will be remembered as a loving husband to his wife, Susan, with whom he spent the last twenty years in Fair Lawn, New Jersey. In them, he instilled an adventurous and strong independent spirit that they’ve carried throughout their lives. He was a proud father who unconditionally supported his sons’ ambitions and dreams. Bronc was selflessly dedicated to his entire family.
He was a devoted son to his parents and helped care for them in their later years. He was extremely close to his three sisters, Jane Brophy, Annie Long, and the dearly-departed Barbara Bowers, all of whom he loved very much. Edward T. Long, Annie’s late husband, was Bronc’s best friend.
Bronc and Susan provided constant support to the Brophy’s as Jerry Brophy bravely battled illness prior to his passing. His nieces and nephews will fondly remember “Uncle Bronc” as the “fun uncle” whose good natured tomfoolery, pranks, and zany sense of humor were highlights at the Campbell family holiday gatherings. Bronc adored his nieces and nephews — He routinely brought all the kids to Action Park, canoeing down the Delaware River, or on one-day Shore trips during Summer.
Once, he spent an entire weekend driving his then-teenaged niece, Donna Brophy, to seemingly every music store in New Jersey so she could find her dream Les Paul guitar. More importantly, he was always willing to “look the other way” when necessary — and saved many from unnecessary groundings or punishments. Bronc graduated from Morristown High School in 1960, and attended the Rochester Institute of Technology following high school.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserves. He worked at Wood Press in Paterson, New Jersey, Compton Press, and LP Thebault in Parsippany. He is survived by his wife, Susan, his three sons from a previous marriage and their spouses, Russell and Taira Campbell of Salt Lake City, Utah, Sean and Claudia Campbell, and Galen Campbell and Jenny Weger of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, his step-daughter Lisa Landers, her husband Mark, three granddaughters, Addison, Annie and Bridget, grandsons Jasper and Charlie, his sisters Jane Brophy and Annie Long, his many nieces and nephews, and best friend, Ernie, his loyal pug.
A private family gathering will be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association in Bronc’s memory.
