Obituary for Sacramento M Ortiz Sacramento Ortiz was born on August 28, 1927 in Mesa, Arizona to Leo M. Ortiz and Josefina Mendivil Ortiz. He was the baby in a family of 14 brothers and sisters. Known to everyone affectionately as “Sac,” he came from a long line of life-long Arizonans.
His grandfather was a noted farmer near the Salt River in what became the “Mesa Section” in 1867. He graduated from Mesa High. Uncle Sac, as many called him, was preceded in death by the love of his life, Dorothy (Dot) Bruno.
They met while he was on a business trip in Philadelphia. Several weeks later he packed up his life in Arizona and headed back East to spend what would be the happiest days of his life with his beautiful bride. He spoke so fondly of their time together.
Stories of their amazing nights on the town in Atlantic City, fixing up their house in New Jersey and spending time in the Poconos were always at the top of his sharing list. Sac and Dot also loved spending time in New York City and attending exclusive clubs as well as having lavish dinners. Their love affair was a true adventure.
Beyond his love of Dot, Sac had a passion for many things. He was a devoted Catholic, and anyone who knew him could tell you he had very strong political opinions. Sac loved all things Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, and Frank Sinatra, amassing quite an array of collectibles.
And always on the lookout for great deal or interesting find, he enjoyed shopping on QVC as well as trips to the casino and a good Italian meal. In the end though it was Sac’s family and friends that were always his priority. With his big heart, he easily became “Uncle” to all, if not by blood, then in spirit.
If you needed him, he would be there in a heartbeat. He believed that you learn more when you listen than when you speak. In his later years, he moved back to Arizona.
He remained incredibly active often outpacing his much younger family members. Throughout his 80s and into his 90s, he continued to travel with trips across Arizona and even to Disneyland. He would also return to the East Coast whenever he could, taking family to all his favorite places and sharing all the beloved memories he created there.
Still driving into his 90s, he could be found once a month attending luncheons with high school friends, running errands, or hanging out with his youngest Godsons. In the end, it was that time spent with family and friends that were Sac’s favorite. And though his passing has left us with great sadness it is that time and those memories we will continue to cherish forever.
