A Celebration of Life Sallie Bell Harris Johnson was born February 4, 1934 to the proud parents of Andrew Jackson Harris, Jr. and Lovie Lee Bagman-Harris in Barbour County, Alabama. Sallie B, as she was lovingly called, was the third of five children of this union. Her schooling took place in a church setting, which was not uncommon in Sallie B’s day.

This particular setting may have been her inspiration to accept Christ at an early age. She joined the Tabernacle A.M.E. Church in Clayton, AL. After moving to Dothan, AL, she joined South Park Church of Christ under the leadership of Minister Reginald Jones and remained a member until her passing on May 16, 2018.

Sallie B married Andrew Johnson, Sr. who preceded her in death. Born to their union were two sons: Andrew Johnson, Jr. and Willie Ed Johnson. Willie Ed also preceded her in death.

Even though, Sallie B had a physical challenge (blindness), she did not allow it to keep her from accomplishing whatever she set her mind to do. She attended the Alabama School for the Blind in Talladega, AL. Sallie B enjoyed traveling and seeing God’s creation.

Among her favorite places were Niagara Falls and California. She loved eating seafood and enjoyed Dungeness crabs at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco. To start her day, she had a cup of coffee, which she called “Joe Louis” because it had to be strong.

She “watched,” not listened to, her favorite TV shows daily. At times, it was easy to forget that she was actually totally blind. One day, she shared that she’d been riding a bicycle!

Later, she explained that it was a tandem bike! Praise God! Sallie B also enjoyed singing God’s songs of praise, ol’-school style.

On Wednesday, May 16, 2018, the sun set for Sallie B. With her son, Andrew, by her side, the Lord called her home. She had successfully come to the end of a courageous life. We loved her dearly, but the Master’s timing is always perfect.

She leaves to cherish her courageous memory her son, Andrew, Jr. Dothan, AL; one brother, Johnny Harris, Eufaula, AL; one sister-in-law, Sallie Mae Harris, Clayton, AL; and the love of her life, her grandson, Kevon Johnson, Dothan, AL. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
