Cortland, Ohio – Shirley Fay Root, age 80, died on Monday, March 4, 2019. She was born on October 10, 1938 in Elyria, Ohio, a daughter of Maybelle Mae (nee, Manning) Smith-Snodgrass (Jack) and her father, Robert John Smith. Formerly of Kinsman and Champion, Shirley was a 1956 graduate of Kinsman High School.

Shirley began her banking career in 1972 for Union National Bank of Champion, moving to North Bloomfield as bank manager in 1988 and finishing her career for the now Bank One in Howland. After retiring from Bank One, she began with Cortland Bank managing for many different branches becoming Vice President before retiring in 2009 with thirty-seven years of service. On July 18, 1962 she married Frank Lewis Root.

She attended the Kinsman Presbyterian Church and the Champion Christian Church. Formerly a member of the Howland and Champion Rotary Clubs and the Orwell Chamber of Commerce, she was a supporter of her community. Shirley enjoyed traveling, doing crafts, sewing, reading and baking.

She was an animal lover, especially cats. Shirley is preceded in death by her parents and step-father Jack Snodgrass; her husband of fifty-three years, Frank L. Root; her son, Jerry Betts and a brother, Dean Snodgrass. Survivors include her daughter, Denise D. (Leigh) Collins of Fowler, Ohio; her son, James F. Betts of Southington, Ohio; two grandchildren, Brandy and Jay Tee; four great grandchildren; a sister, Martha (Alberto) Sagues of Lutz, Florida; a brother, Dale Snodgrass of Kinsman and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 8, 2019 at 6:00pm at the Kinsman Presbyterian Church, 6383 Church Street, Kinsman, with Pastor Susan Francis officiating. Private burial to follow in Kinsman Cemetery.
