OBITUARY Shirley Hunt March 31, 1945 – October 6, 2018 Shirley H. Hunt, immigrant, accomplished executive, retiree, foodie, and Master Gardener, died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, October 6, 2018. Shirley loved HEB, doing the seemingly impossible, fighting the good fight, Facebook, Wimberley, pie, music, her family, and her friends. A true believer in karma, good always seemed to come her way in the form of those who were part of her life.
Born in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan, Shirley was proud and thankful to be the daughter of Marie Helene Christina Mayes (deceased) and Jimmie Mayes (deceased), both of whom she loved very much. She also had the good fortune of meeting and marrying Isaiah Hunt in 1965. Soon after the couple moved to his home state of Texas; there they shared over 2 decades of marriage and together raised 3 children Darrel Hunt (deceased), Tina Hunt, and Delisa Hunt.
Shirley was also a Grandmother of 5, Great-grandmother of 7, and soon to be 8 fantastic young adults and kids. At a time when women in general had few career opportunities and women of color had even fewer, Shirley refused to stay in what others deemed to be “her place”. Not only did she work during the day, making a valuable contribution to the household, she also attended night classes at Houston Community College.
In 1970 she began working for the Maritime Association – I.L.A. in Houston, as a Claims Processor. Eventually she replaced the very man who hired her when she was named Administrator in 1987. A position that brought her great satisfaction, a wealth of memories, and meaningful relationships with co-workers and colleagues.
Many of whom she came to regard and love as true friends. After 30 years of employment she retired in 2000. Her retirement years were altogether boring until she discovered Wimberley, Texas.
There she took up residence with 3 males – Chester, Lester, and Scooter (her cats), began wearing cut-off denim shorts and was even known to don a trucker cap from time to time. In Wimberley, Shirley found peace and a sense of community. She made friends and utilized her voice and a good chunk of her time to inform area residents of events and matters that are important to the long-term preservation and progress of the town.
Those of you who would like to honor her are asked to continue working to improve res for current and future Wimberley residents and visitors. Also hold dear the precious and unique features and natural res that contribute to making the area “A Little Bit of Heaven”. A Memorial Service will be held at the Forest Park East Funeral Home, 21620 Gulf Freeway, Webster, Texas, 77598, on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 10 a.m. *casual attire, please feel free to come as you are* In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations to either Habitat for Humanity or the U.N.C.F.
The family would also like to thank the Hays County Sheriff’s Office and Justice of the Peace Andrew Cable for their assistance and compassion.
