OBITUARY Sophia P. Bugdon October 6, 1918 – January 11, 2019 Sophia P. Bugdon, 100, of Berkeley Township, passed away on Friday January 11, 2019 at her home. She had worked as a secretary for the attorney of a major chemical plant in Jersey City before stopping to become a housewife and raise her family. Born and raised in Bayonne, NJ, she lived in Clark NJ for 18 years before moving to Holiday City Carefree in 1978.

When she first moved here, she taught people how to play Mahjong at the clubhouse. She started the We Thee Club after doing charity work in a nursing home from the women’s club buying things and making booties and blankets, all knitted or crocheted for 48 patients. Once a month she brought 48 cupcakes for patients to celebrate their birthdays.

Sophia was one of 16 members who started the Polish American Club of Toms River in 1981 and it increased its membership to over 250 people. She always held an executive position with the club. In May of 2004 she was honored with a plaque as Woman of the Year.

She enjoyed putting different decorations in the clubhouse for whatever holiday happened to be in that month. She was predeceased by her husband Bernard B. Bugdon; her parents Boleslaw and Loretta Nowakoski, her sister Catherine Reno and her husband Thomas; her brothers Walter and Helen Nowakoski, Henry and Sophie Nowakoski, Edward and Irene Nowakoski, two infants William and Christine Bugdon; her son in law Dennis Mantia. She is survived by two daughters Carol McGuigan and husband Dennis and Nacy Mantia; grandson Dennis Mantia, Jr. and two great-grandchildrfen Destiny and Dennis, III Mantia and also several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday January 17, 2019 from 7 – 9 PM at Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home 26 Mule Road Toms River, NJ 08755. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday January 18, 2019 at 10:30 AM at St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington, NJ.
