Mohawk – Stanley N. Tooke, 87, received his wish to pass at home and join his beloved mother, father, and daughter in the great beyond on Friday November 16, 2108. He was born June 23, 1931 in Sherrill, NY the son of the late F. Victor and Mae (Newman) Tooke. He was educated in Sherrill schools.
Mr. Tooke was a United States Navy Veteran during the Korean Conflict. He was enlisted on December 4, 1950 and was honorably discharged on February 28, 1953 with the rank of FN. He was proud of his service and later was connected as civilian military in his work as Warehouse Supervisor for at Griffis Air Force Base.
For many years Stan was owner and operator of Stan’s Barber Shop in Mohawk, enjoying the company of many individuals and families as he cut their hair. He was former Vice Chairman of the Jaycees organization and was awarded for his work to combat air and water pollution. He supported the fire department locally.
Stan loved the scenery and wilderness of Central New York and spent many days wandering the back roads, never passing up a good yard sale. He enjoyed buying and selling antiques and was big into it in it’s heyday. Stan enjoyed camping and fishing with his father in his youth and later with his family.
He traveled across the country to show his children the beauty of the land he loved. A man dedicated to his family, his life was centered around his loved ones. He devoted much time to creating and maintaining a nice home, insuring a nurturing home life and providing a special gathering place for his family.
He especially enjoyed quality time that he spent with his grandsons. Survivors include his daughter, Janice E. Burdick and husband Edward E. Burdick of Webster, NY; a son, Ronald J. Tooke and wife Judith of Central Square, NY; two grandsons, Branden DiDonna of Hunter, NY and Joseph Arida Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA; a son-in-law, Joseph Arida of Virginia Beach, VA; his in-laws Joseph Neil Stott, Charlotte Nuzum, and Bruce McCullough; and several nieces and nephews. He enjoyed a 30 year loving relationship with Carol Dapiece of Marcy NY.
He also loved her children and grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by a daughter, Sheryl Lynn Arida of Virginia Beach, a sister Charlotte (Sherry) McCullough, and the mother of his children Carolyn J. Tooke. A special thanks to Mark Bisignani of Mohawk for several years of friendship and assistance to Stan and family.
The family will be receiving relatives and friends to celebrate Stanley’s life on November 24th from 10-12 at the Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service, (next to NBT Bank), 527 East Albany Street, Herkimer, NY 315-866-1500. Full military honors will be accorded at the funeral home at 12:00 noon.
