Stanley R. McCleary, age 78, of Knox, passed away Thursday morning, January 24, 2019 at the Oil City Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. Born April 29, 1940 in Knox, he was a son of the late D.P. “Bully” McCleary and Waiva Bigley McCleary. He was a graduate of Keystone High School, where he played basketball.

Stan married the former Lois J. McIlhattan and she preceded him in death on July 15, 1996. He started as a meter reader for North Penn Gas (now known as UGI), retired as a supervisor and did every job in between. Stan was a member of the Berlin-Bowser American Legion Post #720 of Knox.

He served on Knox Borough Council for 20 years as a council member and president and was a past president of the Clarion County Rod and Gun Club. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed the time he spent with his family. Survivors include a daughter, Pamela J. Ferringer and her husband, Dan, of Knox; two sons: Jeffrey L. McCleary and Amanda Zerbe of Knox and Michael R. McCleary and his wife, Sherri, of Apollo; seven grandchildren: Mark Ferringer and wife, Julie, of Utica; Daniel Ferringer and wife, Jamie, of Lucinda; Cassie Weaver and husband, Zach, of Clarion; David McCleary and wife, Lindsey, of Charlotte, North Carolina; Drew McCleary and wife, Shaye, of Martins Ferry, Ohio; Brooke McCleary of New Bethlehem and Morgan McCleary of Apollo and six great grandchildren: Grace, Rory, Molly, Killian, Dawson and Keegan.

Stan is also survived by his companion, Suzie Swift, of Knox. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, DeWayne “Duke” McCleary and Eugene “Gene” McCleary and two sisters: Beverly Smail and Joan Myers. Family and friends will be received from 6-8 p.m. Friday, January 25, 2019 and 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the William N. Rupert Mortuary, Inc., 430 Mendenhall Avenue, Knox.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 27, 2019 in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1051 Twin Church Road, Knox, with Reverend Karen Parsh, church pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the Knox Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given in the name of Stanley R. McCleary to the Knox Ambulance Company, P.O. Box 636, Knox, PA 16232; Knox Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 106, Knox, PA 16232 or the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 587, Knox, PA 16232.
