OBITUARY Staten Langbourne Wilcox, Jr. December 13, 1946 – November 25, 2018 CHARLOTTE – Staten Wilcox, 71, passed away on November 25, 2018, after putting up a dogged fight with cancer. He was born on December 13, 1946, in Nuremberg, Germany to the late Madge Heavner Simpson and the late Staten Langbourne Wilcox, Sr. Although born in Germany, Staten was a lifelong Charlottean, raised by his mother and beloved adoptive father James “Tarf” Simpson. Staten grew up with Pat Matus, who remained his lifelong partner in mischief.

He was an alumnus of Myers Park High School, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (and was forever a Tar Heel fan) and the Wake Forest University School of Law. He was a practicing attorney for 40 years, most of which time was spent working alongside dear friend and paralegal Sherrie Lee. He was also a member of Myers Park United Methodist Church and Myers Park Country Club.

Staten had a larger than life personality—he never met a stranger nor ever had a filter. He will be remembered for his quick wit, charisma, loyalty, storytelling (including inappropriate joke-telling), and his love of history, weaponry and old Western films. He is survived by the love of his life and devoted wife of 34 years, Pam Harrelson Wilcox, his two daughters, Paige and Noel (a.k.a. Staten, Jr.), and his son-in-law, Brendan Finn.

He is also survived by his beloved father and mother-in-law, Reverend and Mrs. William Claude Harrelson and a large extended family. The family wants to thank William and Rachel Finn for their guidance, support and love throughout Staten’s illness, especially in his final days. The family also wants to thank the Levine Cancer Institute’s doctors and staff, the Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region team, and the Levine & Dickson Hospice House – Huntersville team.

A service to honor his life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2018, at Myers Park United Methodist Church with the Reverend James Howell officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, Staten would have wanted those who loved him—so all who knew him—to vote President Trump out of office in the 2020 election.

However, donations made to the Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region are also appreciated and can be made online at www. hpccr.org or mailed to PO Box 470408, Charlotte, North Carolina 28247.
